UpChk WAS ORIGINALLY INTENDED FOR THE BBS SYSOP. SINCE ITS RELEASE IN
1990 IT IS USED ON BBS SYSTEMS BY CORPORATIONS AND COMPUTER CLUBS.
HOWEVER, THE SYSOP OF YOUR FAVORITE BBS MAY NOT BE TAKING THE APPROPRIATE
PRECAUTIONS AGAINST TODAY'S VIRUSES - Upchk HAS NOW BEEN MADE AVAILABLE
TO US TOO.
This file contains easy instructions on how to install UpChk for the
individual user. These instructions were not written by the authors of
the program. Instead, they were written by me, a brother. A relatively
inexperienced and marginally competent PC operator . If I can install
this, then anyone can.
Since this was originally for Sysop's only some to the terms used might
get you scratching your head. I will give you a laymans version of them.
NODE - This is the number of phone lines a Sysop has available for
us Users to call in on. To us Users this translates to
Configuration File or Config. File (i.e. UPCHKTD.CFG).
UPLOAD - In our case this would be DOWNLOAD since we are doing the
reverse of what the Sysop should be doing for us.
** SETUP **
Run the setup utility UCSETTD.EXE It will make paths and directories
neccessary to hold all of the Upchk files, receive downloaded files, test
them, then to either hold corrupted files for inspection or copy "clean"
files to the directory of your choice.
I use Telix as my telecommunications program and the following is my
configuration:
Receive Directory: C:\TELIX\DOWN
Test Directory: C:\TELIX\DOWN\TEMP
Hold Directory: C:\TELIX\HOLD
Home Directory: C:\UPCHK
Path and filename for log: C:\UPCHK\FILE.LOG
Copy file to upload directory: Y
If you answer "Y" Upchk will copy all tested files to the directory of
your choice. Mine are copied to c:\telix\CLEAN
you should do this or UpChk will check the files in the Receive directory
again the next time you run it.
It is quite simple so I won't say much more here about setup. If you get
stuck... help is available by pressing F1
** RUNNING Upchk **
After you have run the setup utility, Upchk is ready to use. From the
DOS prompt in the "HOME" Directory type UPCHKTD.EXE followed by
zero & the path to where you want your "good" files to go.
Example...
C:\UPCHK>upchktd.exe 0 c:\telix\clean
** TIPS **
1) Be sure that the virus scanning program you are going to use is
located in a directory that is in the path you specified.
2) Be sure that the Download directory path in your Telecommunications
program is the same as the receive directory in UCSETTD setup.
3) Be sure that all Upchk files are in the "HOME" directory
